Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 01-17-2005

Quote of the day:

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.
Eleanor Roosevelt
US diplomat & reformer (1884 - 1962)

Good morning!

 Good morning !

What do you fear?

According to the Book of Lists most of us fear PUBLIC SPEAKING more than DEATH. (I suppose the most terrifying sound in the world would be “Do you have any last words?")

While I have been unable to find the story printed anywhere, I heard that Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens) was once asked how much he would charge to speak for 5 minutes in front of a ladies group. His immediate response was “Five minutes is $500!”. Now $500 back then was an astronomical fee so his inquisitor gasped. He promptly added “… but if you let me speak for 2 hours the fee will be $5”.  The fact that this man loved to speak in public is incontestable.

Sweaty palms and racing heart? Some people faced with “performance anxiety” will take antianxiety drugs like Xanax or Valium. They become more relaxed but their performance suffers because they just “don’t care” if they do well or not. There are other drugs that work on the symptoms but not on the Psyche. Beta blockers (like propranolol or atenolol) will block the symptoms of anxiety but leave you with “the edge” most people need to give a stellar performance.

How do you help yourself or others with this kind of anxiety short of taking drugs? Scouting is a good place to start your young ones. They may put on the same skit that has been used for over 50 years but they are getting up and speaking in front of a group of friends and relatives. Be encouraging of their efforts.

In College I was afraid to speak but became part of a fraternity project that reached out to 6th graders about drugs/medications. I felt comfortable enough in my knowledge base to be able to stand up in front of kids and speak. I knew I wasn’t 100% successful though when asked by a student “How does it feel to be an addict?”  I went back and refined my introduction. With practice and more knowledge I and have presented scientific papers to National meetings of my peers. I came to enjoy the stimulation and would arm wrestle Mark Twain for a shot at an audience.

If you are still afraid to speak in public the best way is to start slowly but start all the same. Toastmasters anyone? http://www.toastmasters.org/

ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "Bagel-riffic"  (someone on a low-carb diet at the sight of free bagels and cream cheese!)

1) Fear this?

Public Citizen launches website with the “WORST PILLS”. I wondered what was in it for them to attack drug manufacturers so vehemently… they are charging $15/year for web access and are selling their “companion” book.

2) New diet info… 4.5 cups of fruits and veggies a day…

Revised pyramid speaks in cups instead of grams. Emphasis on total calories without regard to carbs, fats, or protein. They mention the “E word” (exercise) and talk about the amount of salt and alcohol to which you should limit yourself.

3) Widen Sesame Street?

Cookie Monster is getting on the healthy eating bandwagon to help reduce childhood obesity. The new season starts April 4th and the blue beast is turning over a new leaf.

4) Will Ronald add insulin syringes as the prize in the Happy Meal?

New Lancet study links fast food to Diabetes. Two visits a week means a 10 pound weight gain and double the insulin resistance. Could be one reason fast food places are all adding salads to their menus. (… ahhh, hold the fries please)

  5) No OTC statins for you!

The FDA panel rejected OTC status recommendations for the cholesterol lowering drugs.  Mevacor was a pioneer “statin”  and has already lost patent protection. In Europe it is available from a pharmacist as an “under the counter” medication but it won’t happen here. People have to be smart enough to diagnose themselves and watch for side effects….. “smart enough” not a good bet.

 6) Lay off the NITRO but…

Viagra safe with some heart medications. Study showed that patients taking antihypertension drugs were OK taking Viagra. (as always… check with your doctor before trying this at home).

 7) Is this just “De’ja Moo”?

Just trying to Tszuj you. I want to avoid De’ja Moo or you will Defenestrate me. Twenty five new corporate terms you may want to know if you wish to be in the know.
