Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 02-16-2004

Quote of the day:   "You are successful when you remember that somewhere, sometime, someone gave you a gift. That gift is what started you in the right direction. Remember that you are blessed when you pass that gift on to help someone else." --Keith D. Harrell

Good morning! Good morning!

Responsibility....not what you think this week.... Response-ability is the theme. Things happen all day long to everyone. Some are seen as "good" and some as "bad".  Those things over which we have no control can be frustrating. You do have control over something very important and it can make or break your day, your week, or your life. You have the capacity to control just how you will REACT to things that happen.  Somebody cuts you off in traffic...what is your RESPONSE? Be aggressive and start to tailgate them? This may get you into trouble (especially on icy roads)....why put yourself in MORE danger because of someone else's driving?

You get caught behind a slow driver... it could be the that that little delay keeps you from an accident. Your boss gives you and extremely difficult assignment... maybe this will be the project that "gets you noticed" (It may not but there are a lot of people out there that are out of work).

As  Keith Harrell   once wrote "Attitude is Everything". Try to be positive for one week.... it can be habit forming and reduce the stress in your life related to the things you can't change anyway..... it couldn't hurt!

1) Why should anyone expect a pharmacist at a pharmacy?

No pharmacist at a Canadian pharmacy and other deficiencies are uncovered upon inspection of Canadian pharmacies. But Minnesota continues to promote the cross-border purchase of pharmaceutical.

2)  Martha should have waited….
ImClone Systems Inc. gets FDA approval to sell Erbitux, I believe the stock was up close to $10. This may be good news for Martha if she accepts a plea bargain while the stock is up. It doesn't make anything she did (or didn't do) any less illegal but the psychology of the issue changes in a way to MAYBE cut her some slack.

3) Law suits limited in the "You made me fat" legal arena…

if this legislation goes through.  Trial lawyers are loosing control. People will no longer be able to claim that a fast food place made them fat...... Expect their mothers to take the blame...again....

4) "An ACE is an ACE is an ACE.." is the mantra.

Physicians believe that there are no significant differences between the ACE inhibitors. Lotensin is now approved in generic form. As about half are now available generically you can expect the bottom to fall out of the brand name products (even those still on patent).

5)  Expect more hot flashes and less dementia…
as fewer women opt for estrogen treatment. NEWS FLASH: the drugs that they will use instead of the estrogens will cost many multiples of the cost of estrogens.

Dementia linked to estrogens- click here

6) Suicide has been around for centuries.

Twenty five years ago I learned a little something about depression and antidepressants> When patients are in the deepest despair they may have the suicidal thoughts but are not able to act on them. As patients start to respond to treatment with drugs they find the energy to act on the thoughts. The trick is to get them through this phase with a watchful eye.

7) MJ munchies defeated by drug...next blockbuster?

Rimonabant appears to block the cannabis receptor. Expect this to be used for weight control and also for smoking cessation. I would expect that it could be an aid in getting people to stop smoking marijuana. (no kick= no habit?) This will be out in 2006 and expect it to be a BLOCKBUSTER.  The only thing to make it bigger would be if it grew hair too!

Have a SUPER-FANTASTIC week. Steve
