02-27-2006 Quote of the day: Believe nothing against another but on good authority; and never report what may hurt another, unless it be a greater hurt to some other to conceal it. William Penn English religious leader and colonist (1644 - 1718)
Maslow says take one giant step forward. So what is the big deal about gossip? Gossip: "information manufactured to fill the void left by the lack of real information." This is common in companies when a merger or acquisition is in progress. Employees often revert to level 1 or 2 of Maslow's Hieracy of Needs. Some will not feel loved or feel their self-esteem challenged.
Prime biological needs: oxygen, food, water, and a relatively constant body temperature. They are the strongest needs; unsatisfied we die.
After the prime needs security needs become active. Adults normally pay little heed to security needs except in emergencies or breakdown of the social structure (such as rioting). Children often are insecure and display the need to be safe.
Have primary and secondary? The next class of need: love, affection and belongingness. Maslow states that people seek to overcome feelings of loneliness and alienation. This involves both giving and receiving love, affection and the sense of belonging.
Have the first three classes of needs are satisfied? Next is for esteem; both self-esteem and the esteem from others. Humans have a need for a stable, firmly based, high level of self-respect, and respect from others. Satisfied, the person feels self-confident and valuable. When unsatisfied, the person feels inferior, weak, helpless and worthless.
Ready for the next step? Maslow describes self-actualization as the need to be and do what you were "born to do." A carpenter must create in wood, a musician in music, artists in their medium, and a poet must write. These needs make themselves felt in signs of restlessness. The person feels on edge, tense, lacking something, in short, restless. If you are hungry, unsafe, not loved or accepted, or lacking self-esteem, it is very easy to know what you are restless about. It is not always clear what you want when there is a need for self-actualization. Finding your Opus Magnus or great work is difficult. Take care of one through four and follow that dream! =================================================== ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "Not half bad" (a more than half-good person)
pps. Occasionally, some of the links require FREE registration.... I'm sure you can handle THAT slight inconvenience.
1) The fungus a-mong-us! New IV antifungal drug approved for life threatening fungal infections. Most of us will not be affected but it could be a life-saver for immuno-compromised patients. http://www.pfizer.com/pfizer/are/news_releases/2006pr/mn_2006_0221.jsp
2) Speak now or forever hold your peace! Draft guidance on the 2007 Medicare Part D formulary available for comment before March 6th. If you want something "on" or "off" then let them know before 5pm (EST) because they go home then! http://www.cms.hhs.gov/PrescriptionDrugCovContra/03_RxContracting_FormularyGuidance.asp
3) Seniors not buying from Canada. Some are finding out that Medicare Part D is a better deal than illegally buying from Canada !
4) Contraceptive patch found more dangerous that the already iffy pills. Both can increase blood clots and the risk of strokes and heart attacks. For one to say that they are better would be like the failed cheese advertisement "Eat Cheese…. at least we're not bacon!" (As you know… I am a proponent of "Natural Family Planning" http://www.ccli.org/ ) http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/living/health/13901817.htm ====================================================
5) Not roto-rooter… Rotovirus vaccine gets endorsement for use un routine immunization schedule. Last time I checked immunizations cost of injection they were about $600/month for 6 months. This new form is given orally for 3 months. We will see how the final price effects acceptance.
6) You don't need a prescription… but it doesn't work either. Glucosamine and chondroitin don't seem to work for knee pain. (Some, with the worst pain, thought that it was better than placebo. but then again some people think that copper bracelets work). http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060223/NEWS06/602230423/1012
7) Valued Vasoactive Viper Venom Valid Venture? Snake venom could lead to a whole new class of drugs used in stroke. Expect other companies to try other species of snakes. Viprinex (I couldn't make that up) is in phase III trials as I write. If you want to make a little extra money then you could start raising a herd of the little critters…. just don't call me at round up time. http://money.cnn.com/2006/02/24/news/companies/snake/index.htm?source=yahoo_quote ------------ Have a SUPER-FANTASTIC week.
