Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 03-22-2004

Quote of the day:   Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.

               Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955)

Good morning! Good morning!

Albert Einstein had the good sense to decline the opportunity to become the first leader of Israel after world war II. Do any of the politicians really BELIEVE what they tout? The "art" of politics appears to be to apply pressure where it can work to your own advantage. In the boxing ring the pressures applied are direct and support the goal of rendering the opponent unconscious. In politics there are roundhouse punches thrown in one direction to deflect attention or push another agenda.

Here we have examples of this phenomenon:        1) Push Canadian imports-->really want Price controls     2) Reject imports due to safety concern --> worried about safety but also really worried about the economics   3)  Pressure Pharma to disclose marketing costs --> pressure pharma to allow imports = really want pharma to accept price controls

Intellectual property rights are being assailed on all fronts:

1)       people (adults as well as children) steal copyrighted music because they can and because it is cheaper than purchase

2)      generic drug companies try to find a way to invalidate patents in order to manufacture and sell drugs before patents truly expire

3)      Brand name manufacturers extend patent protection by testing such drugs as Viagra and Oral contraceptive in children.

4)      India, China, and Brazil (to name just a few) pay no more than to lip service to international patent and copyright protection (music, drugs, books, ANYTHING)

Look for the hidden agenda when listening to anyone. Usually if you follow the money then you will begin to understand the process and the motivation behind actions.  Try to stow your prejudices and get back to the basics….. what is best for your country, your family or yourself? What will get you closer to the goals you set for yourself last week? Will it get you closer to the moral life you want to live?

Whatever you do this year….listen intently and think about the consequences of acting on someone else’s agenda.

1) Imported drugs? Proof?   Proof!
Just one day in the New York postal facility shows major import problems with prescription drugs. Outdated, distressed, counterfiet, and worse. Expect more of these inspections to show the poor quality of drugs coming into the US and people who want to import to deny that this poses any threats.

2) More Minnesota Drug connection- or disconnect

DFL in the State wants to pass a law that would have the effect of making all drugs unavailable to all Minnesotans. Talk about ENFORCED GENERICS!

Legislative sponsor essentially calls Brand name prescription drugs a monopoly that has to be regulated. Using her logic then all patented products would fall into that bucket! I wonder how 3M and Medtronic will look at this issue I expect enough pressure will be applied by non-pharma companies to keep this off of the floor.

  3) How much is spent on direct to consumer advertising of pharmaceuticals?

… maybe the Minnesota state legislator should just contact VERISPAN and buy the data they have.

  4) Half a TRILLION here…. half a TRILLION there

…. pretty soon you have a TRILLION!

The world wide annual drug spend ( and half is spent by Americans and Canadians)….

5) "60 Stupid Minutes"?

Not even thinly veiled push for price controls on drugs….. how about price controls on advertising (print and media). Just think of the money that would be saved on just about everything we buy….. and I'm sure the prices of everything would drop as well… (Didn't I read about that happening in 1929?)

6) The secret to reining in health care costs is….

elusive at best. This article speaks to the hopes and realities of new therapies. The past hopes and dashed dreams. See if you can predict the future. Long but worth the read…

7) Maybe everybody involved with the politics of drugs should heed the message of the week….

Government to launch anti-bullying campaign.  Does anybody else think that this is hugely funny….. that the people who are best at it (politicians) on a macro scale would be against it on a Micro scale?

Have a SUPER-FANTASTIC week. Steve
