Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 04-10-2006

Quote of the day:   "Failure is not the only punishment for laziness; there is also the success of others." Jules Renard (1864 - 1910)

Good morning !

Magic words

What do you say to an employee who is belligerent, uncooperative or lazy? You could say "you are belligerent, uncooperative, and lazy" but chances are that things would only escalate. Next time you are trying to manage someone whom you would rather have sit in the corner or get a "time out" why not try the Magic words? No, they are not 'please' and 'thank you". Try saying "My job is to help you to be successful. "  This statement is likely to be unanticipated and tough to rebut. If you need to be even firmer you can explain that "(behavior X) is not going to make you successful in this job."  While these words may start a dialog, the response you receive may determine your next course of action. If the other person starts pulling on your end of the rope to accomplish the mutual task then you are well on the road to a productive relationship. If the employee insists on pulling on the other end of the rope and defies your authority and does not wish to share in the success of the organization then, as Frank Boreman of Boeing fame suggests, it may be time to part company. Frank says that prolonging the employment that appears inevitably doomed is doing the employee a disservice. Keeping them is delaying their entry into their next job where they may find productive, rewarding work.

Let me know how these few "magic" words work for you… as you know my job is to help you be successful!

ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "As good as I'll ever be!"

pps. Occasionally, some of the links require FREE registration.... I'm sure you can handle THAT slight inconvenience.

1) Daytrana approved

Ritalin (methylphenidate) in dermal patch form was approved for ADHD. Kids will not have to see the school nurse during the day to receive a dose of medication. (The sustained release oral forms prevented a lot of this already.) Now kids who refuse to swallow the pills have an option, at least for 9 hours a day.

2) Another generic for Salagen

This should make the forth generic product approved in the year since Salagen lost its patent. MGI fought back with a higher strength but it is hard to stem the generic tide.

3) Minnesota Medication Manufacturer (3M) wants to sellout

3M wants to sell off its drug business. It can concentrate on tape and Post-it notes. Have an extra billion or so?

4) Smoking associated with cervical cancer

Not really new news but just one more reason to quit!

5) Asthma aid attacked

Sevevent is a blockbuster drug with huge use  (and sales). A study showed that death was more likely when the asthmatic was using active Serevent than with placebo. Causal relationship has not been established but things don't look too good right now. Death is not uncommon in patients who experience asthmatic attacks but there may be something here. While a little "over the top" this article does raise the issues. It will be up to the researchers and clinicians to put this information into perspective.

6) Sugar and spice…

lead to diabetes. Twice as many kids are on oral medications for diabetes. In the past, if children had diabetes it was considered juvenile-onset and insulin dependent. Pills just don’t work in this type. The sad thing is that what was considered "adult onset" diabetes, often linked to weight gain, is now occurring in kids as America keeps getting fatter and fatter.

7) Sugar substitute safe

Study shows no increase in cancer related to the use of aspartame. Good news for those with a "sweet tooth" but who do not want a "sweet waist."
