Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 04-25-2005

Quote of the day:

Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.      Sir Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965)

Good morning!

 Good morning !

One more!

When the kids were younger I took them to a Minnesota Twins baseball clinic. One player that stood out was the catcher, Brian Harper. It was what he told the kids not what he showed them that was impressive. He told us that he took an extra 30minutes of batting practice every day. Why? The practice gave him at least one "extra" pitch for each at bat if he could at least make contact. That one pitch could mean one more hit per game. That Hit could lead to one more base runner and even one more run per game. Another run….maybe another win per series. That "extra" series per season could lead to a playoff birth. One more playoff game might mean a pennant. One more pennant could lead to one more ring.

One more patient enrolled one day "early" into a cancer study due to your efforts could mean that:

  • the study was completed a day earlier because of that patient's data.
  • the study was written up a day earlier
  • the study was submitted for publication a day earlier
  • the study makes the July issue of the journal instead of August publication
  • the NDA submission to the FDA was ready a month "early"
  • the FDA reviews the drug at this month's meeting instead of next month's
  • the cancer patient receives the drug "early" because of all of the above effort
  • the cancer was one day from critical mass but responds to the new treatment
  • the patient lives and is loved for more than just "one more day"

I'm sure you do something between baseball and caner research but the lesson still applies. What is your "lifetime batting average"? What is your average for just today? Will you give that little "extra" push? You may never know the full effect but it may be worth it to a fellow human.

Do a little bit "extra" each day and you develop a habit of excellence that could lead to bigger and better things for you, your company, your country, and your world. Imagine if everyone did…..

ps Brian Harper's career batting average was 0.295 (In over 3,300 at bats he struck out only 182 times) http://www.positivesideofsports.com/espn-personalities-bharper.htm

ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick!"

  1) Case in point!

Statisticians who helped design and monitor this trial earned their pay. Drug doesn't even have a "real" name yet and the Phase III studies were halted because the drug was SO effective against cancer. (See what a little planning and effort can do!) http://yahoo.reuters.com/financeQuoteCompanyNewsArticle.jhtml?duid=mtfh63831_2005-04-18_11-20-16_l18572694_newsml

 2) Homework?

Should pharmacists retain the right to refuse to dispense any medications? I'll give you a week to read this article before I say anything. Form you own opinion then read mine… Next week (if you dare).

 3) 90 days at retail?

Look for this tactic to be used by retail pharmacists to stem the tide of mail order prescriptions. Chains and independents participate. This should have no effect on the "Big Three" PBMs (for now). This could be a bigger factor if it becomes part og the Medicare Part D offerings being concocted by insurance companies.

 4) Not just pills anymore….Vioxx judge tainted.

Judge took $60.000 contribution from plaintiff's lawyer. Judge should have the decency to ask to be recused. (Has already been re-cussed!)

 5) Minnesota to ban Sudafed sales

State of Minnesota battles the methamphetamine epidemic with potential ban on pseudoephedrine sales. Expect the industry to fight back…. there is a lot of money in sniffles! (pseudoephedrine pills are used to manufacture methamphetamine)

 6) Take me out to the ball park…

AARP pushes bill to force pharmacies to "ball park" their prices for the top 100 prescriptions. Pharmacists would have to pay to transmit the data and the website would cost $1.5 million to start and $500,000 per year after that.. and that is just for New York!

7)….buy me some poultry and Cracker Jack

Pancreatic cancer linked to the links (sausages and hot dogs that is). (Golfers can relax now… not THOSE links). Pork and highly processed meats also appear to increase the incidence.  Fat content of meals was not a factor. Almost 200,000 people studied for 7 years… looks like this data will stand. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=594&ncid=594&e=12&u=/nm/20050420/hl_nm/meat_cancer_dc
