Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 05-08-2006

Quote of the day:     Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take,

but by the moments that take our breath away.   Anonymous

Good morning !

School play

This was the last weekend of my youngest son's high school musical, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. " Kids I have seen him with over the last 4 years simply took my breath away with superb performances. Eleven "brothers" moving as one. Sets and special effects that were not digitized. Choreography to rival Broadway. Costumes held together with as much love as thread. These plays build memories, talent and confidence; three things that will come in handy as each one moves on to their next station in life. I will post pictures from the play on the website later this week for the curious.

I was very proud of my son who played Pharoah. He'll be studying Biochemistry this "Phall" and could be the next "Pharo-macist" in the "Phamily".

ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "Fantabulous!

pps. Occasionally, some of the links require FREE registration.... I'm sure you can handle THAT slight inconvenience.

  ------------

1) Ambi-quiddick?

US Rep, Patrick Kennedy (yes… part that THAT Kennedy family) claims that Ambiem made him crash his car near the capital. Was also taking the recently maligned drug Phenergan. I have seen other reports that this person has had trouble with chemicals that are not to be obtained from a pharmacy as well. Good thing he wasn't taking Vioxx or the Kennedy clan might own the rest of the country by the time that are through shifting the blame…. (but how do I really feel?)

2) Pompie disease: Don't worry about this newly approved, $200K/year drug.

It is HIGHLY unlikely that any of your employees will be taking this newly approved drug for a rare genetic disorder name after the physician who discovered it…. not the city. (If you do have a Pomeillian, THEN you will notice).

3) Dakosaurus uncovered by the FDA

A few months ago scientists uncovered a new dinosaur…Dakosaurus. Dacogen (decitabine) was first discovered in the 1960 but was only recently approved by the FDA for myelodysplastic syndrome. A lonnnnggggg time coming. It will give Vidaza a run for your money (warning: I own stock in MGI Pharma) but will not be a blockbuster.

4) Mor eeye infections linked to B&L solutions

Othe Bauch and Lomb solutions have been implicated in otherwise rare eye infections. I just can't see using any B&L until this is settled. (Pun intended). Stock price drops (as if you could see that coming).

5) A kinder, gentler ad campaign for ED drugs

Viagra, Levitra and Cialis are all chasing the same market. The suggestive ads of the past are making way for more clinical data (interpretation). Good…. what were those bathtubs about anyway?

6) Live free or die.(The motto on the NH state flag).

New hapshire residents don't take a middle ground. Some physicians are objecting to the gathering and dissemination of data about their prescribing habits. If they were following therapeutic guidelines and evidence based medicine they should have no objections. (Just my opinion… I could be wrong).

7) Ya pays Ya money and ya takes ya chances.

State of Nevada is promoting the use of Canadian drugs via the internet. Even after most studies show that Part-D is cheaper.  Besides being illeagal it is risky (confiscation, adulterated drugs, and scams to name a few.)
