Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 05-23-2005

Quote of the day:  "Fishing is not a matter of life and death… some things are MORE important!"  anon.

  Good morning!

Gone Fishin'

Benadryl doesn't work on 'em. Calamine lotion is ineffectual. There is only one cure for "Fishing Pox"….. a pole and a line and some water! I was unable to get out last year due to the 3-season porch project but Memorial Day weekend I finally get to DO something about the urge to fish.

What is it about fishing that makes (some of) us crazy to get on the water?

Is it the deafening quiet or sound of a lone loon? Is the gentle swaying of the boat reminiscent of being rocked in our mother's arms? Is it the company of other fishers (past and present; family and friends) that soothes like oatmeal on a cool morning? Does the savory flavor of fresh fried fish dive us to sit in one place long enough to require a Gold Bond powder treatment? Is it the vibration of the rod in hand and sound of the words "fish on!"? Does catching a fish produce the same chemical release experienced by gamblers who win a pull or a pot? (Every fish is a trophy… at least until you get it in the boat!)

I believe that the answer to all of the questions above is "yes!"

While I am gone fishing I will take time to remember the reason for the long weekend…. the brave men and women of the armed services who are now gone. Protecting our country and our freedom was a lofty ideal and one that we can all enjoy, not just this weekend, but all of the time. (see http://www1.va.gov/opa/feature/celebrate/memday.htm  for the origins of Memorial Day) We are free to live, vote, pray, speak, write.... and fish!

Though he is now gone, "the first fish is for you Dad!"

ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "Going to catch up on my sleep now that finals are over!"

___________________________________________________________________

1) Turn off the TV and go to bed!

Your mother was right…. Kids who watch more TV and get less sleep are more likely to be obese. This study was done on 3 years olds! More than 8 hours a week of TV and less than 10 and 1/2 hours of sleep a night were a problem. This can lead to all sorts of social and medical problems such as diabetes. (I know a few other people who could benefit from this advice who are well over 3 years of age!)

2) Pfizer Pfor Preemptive Pformal Pfederal Pill Pandering Perusal

Regarding direct to consumer advertising. The FDA may get into the censorship business on the front end instead of responding to complaints. Pfizer exec realize that it might be cheaper for everyone to get permission instead of asking for forgiveness (and paying the PR price for alleged missteps)

3) Just 1 more and it would be 400!

There are 399 new cancer drugs in the pipeline right now. I expect that there will be plenty more to come because cancers are generally associated with advancing age and I know of no one with retreating age (hairlines=yes… age=No). With the extraordinary numbers of ways that cell growth occurs and the huge number of process that can go amiss, there will never be just one "cure" for cancer.

4) Increase generic use? Save $ billions?… Now why didn't I think of that?

We have been singing this song for at least a decade now. With the government soon to launch the Medicare Part D drug benefit and pay for even more medications…. do you think they might pay attention now?

5)  "psst…'Genital Herpes'… pass it on…"

How to spread genital herpes even faster… use hormonal contraceptives! Oral contraceptives nearly double the chances of passing "it" on to a partner. Need I say more?

 6) Xpress "Pharmacy" seized

An illegal internet "pharmacy" was shut down and all assets (>$4 million) seized this week in a suburb of Minneapolis. Viagra and narcotics were standard fare for this "business". Neither the owner ("would-be_ pharmacist)  nor the business (would-be- pharmacy) were registered with the State. Oops! They can express themselves directly to jail; do not pass "GO", and do not collect any more $200 fees.

 7) Recycling of Pharmaceuticals?

"Recycling of prescription drugs" is a misnomer at best. When newsprint, cans and bottles are re-cycled, they are not just redistributed in their present for but are, instead, just used as raw materials to re-manufacture other products. (I, for one, would not want to be reading last months newspaper while sipping a Coke out of a refilled can. ) FDA allows states to consider medications previously dispensed to another patient to be taken back by the pharmacist and re-dispensed. Drugs would have to be under the control of health practitioners from the time of dispensing until re-dispensing. Nursing homes would likely be the only application. While it makes for a sensational story, this will not materially effect the cost of drugs in the USA.
