Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 06-05-2006

Quote of the day:    By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right,

he usually has a son who thinks he's wrong.  Charles Wadsworth

Good morning !

Pop Rocks!

The answer to the rhetorical question in the quote is "be a good father".  Father's Day will be two Sunday's from now. Dad's come in many "flavors"…. Mr. Fix-it, outdoorsman (fishing, hunting, golf), indoorsman (books, art, hobby craft, and TV) to name a few. Some are gone through death, divorce or desertion. (OK, it did not work with their mother but that is no reason to desert the kids. Love 'em and set a good example.) What the good fathers all have in common is involvement with their children.  That involvement may only take the form of a good example. How does "Dad" act in public when it comes to women?… prurient glances and comments or respectful interaction.  Sons will learn "acceptable" behavior and how to relate to women. Does "dad" boast of beating the tax system or give examples through charitable works and donations. A father's influence on his daughters is just as real. How you treat your daughter will affect the way she relates to other men. Treat her with dignity and respect and she will accept nothing less.

One place that you can turn for tips and advice is www.dads.org …. it has a religious tone (fatherhood is a religious experience for me)  but could still provide some useful tips.

Gift for Dad? Any way that you can show your gratitude works…

            Father's day card… $3.75

            Tie…. $25

Heartfelt "Thank you" from a loving child…. Priceless!

ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "A freshman again!" ...a recent high school grad soon off to college

pps. Occasionally, some of the links require FREE registration.... I'm sure you can handle THAT slight inconvenience.

1) Specialty cannot be forced on Part-D

According to CMS recipients of Part-D cannot be forced to use Specialty Pharmacies for almost all drugs. Getting o local pharmacy to provide the added services of a Specialty Pharmacy will be up to the recipient. Looks like a goo time to provide other incentives to use the most experienced pharmacies.

2) Free-bees!

Not a chant to release captive insects… Hospitals are increasingly limiting physician acceptance of the free gifts (pens, paper, chater golf outings) from pharmaceutical companies. If physicans can be influenced by free pens then you had better look at your physician remuneration levels.

3) Are you feeling lucky sugar?

American Diabetes Association shows that about 1/3 of the population has diabetes or on the road to it. (Much of it can be related to obesity.)

4) Tree Frog Slime for sale

Brizillian tribe may profit from drug derived from the slime of a little tree frog know as Kombo. Peptides in the slime, which has been used medicinally by the tribe for years, may be the key to new drug development. Still early in the process but the Amazon has produced other gems (anyone remember Captopril?)

5) "The" meeting for anti-cancer drug news

I went to ASCO last year and could not attend all of the sessions that I wanted to. The meeting is huge and "everyone" brings their "best data" here. Some of the studies are the same ones previous published but with data from a few more patients. Much ado about something (even if dominated by BIG PHARMA). http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/060601/cancer_conference.html?.v=1

6) Docs don't desire digital databases

Some of the reasons that physicians have not fully embraced the electronic medical record. Advice: address these concerns and profit!

7) Sprycel to receive quick review.

This drug could replace Gleevec (and maybe a few more) in cancer circles.

Have a SUPER-FANTASTIC week.

Steve
