Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 06-07-2004

Quote of the day:

There are people whom one loves immediately and forever. Even to know they are alive in the world with one is quite enough.

             Nancy Spain

Good morning!

Good morning !

Ronald Reagan died on Saturday. I admired him for his positive attitude (and a  lot more).

The pundits will have their say but most of the stories have a positive spin so far. (It would really be bad form to attack him right now). I received an invitation to his first inauguration and it remains a prized possession (somehow I lost the accompanying note that told me that it was only a souvenir and to NOT show up)  Alzheimer's took him from us years ago so this is just a fading away. He will be remembered for his accomplishments and short comings but his spirit permeated everything he did.

1) Tindamax (Tinidazole) approved for certain infections.

The "nasties" it fights are trichomonas, giardia, and ameba. This is like metronidazole

(Flagyl) and will not put a big dent in your budget unless your lunchroom is in pretty bad shape.. The link brings you to the package insert.

2) There is now a legitimate generic form of Sporanox.

When I put the words generic and Sporanox  into Google I received many offers to but it WITHOUT a prescription from Mexico. The drug has significant  liver toxicities in some people. How would you know if you were one of them….you wouldn't …hence the need for physician prescribing and monitoring. Litigation of the patent has raged for years.

3) FDA and the Land of Lincoln.

FDA rules on Illinois plan to reimport Canadian drugs…. Which letter of "NO" didn't they understand before.

4) Why don't people continue to take their medications?

They make them feel worse. The real issue isn't that they have side effects, it's that they don't have anyone to coach them through the side effect. If they read the patient inserts they might have a chance but…when was the last time YOU read one.

Are you the only one of you? Dumb question?

With identity theft on the rise you need to protect yourself....

Check out his web site and then talk to my friend Tom about identity theft and how you can prevent it.

  5) Tort reform in Ol' Miss?

Medical cases limited to $500,000. Hope this eventually spreads to other states. Look for MASS to be last…..too many lawyers! (Was that too obvious?)

6) Cancer may be manageable if not cured.

When people speak of a "cure for cancer" they speak as if it was only one disease. There are many different organs and many different cell types for ONE cure to work on them all. Huge strides are being made in many cancers such as breast and colon cancers.

7) Lipitor as cancer dug?

Before you get your hopes up….lowering your fat intake might have the same effect. This will be something to watch…. and enjoy if it really works to reduce cancer risks.
