Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 06-12-2006

Quote of the day:    Get away from the crowd when you can. Keep yourself to yourself,

if only for a few hours daily. Arthur Brisbane

Good morning !

All by myself

I'm sure we have all heard this from a toddler…"I (can) do it all by myself!". This independence can be nurtured and developed or stuffed and quashed. Learning to do things by yourself is important, builds true self-esteem and can serve you well in life.

There is another type of "by myself" that we never should grow out of… the need to take time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to be by ourselves and reflect. Some might call this meditation or prayer but simply put, we need some time to THINK. We react or absorb so much input during a typical day that we need to take SOME time to sort it all out.  How do the events of the day FIT into our life goals and plans? How do the ways we act and re-act cause good or bad consequences to ourselves and those we love? Try taking 5 minutes each day this week to THINK. You can move up to 10 minutes a day next week and so on until you feel you have enough. Imagine what might happen if lawmakers started doing the same thing related to drug related legislation. If you don't have a plan then how will you know when you get there?

ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "Just happy to be alive!"

pps. Occasionally, some of the links require FREE registration.... I'm sure you can handle THAT slight inconvenience.

  ------------

1) Birth Defects from ACE inhibitors in about 7% of exposures

Previously thought to be a safe way of treating hypertension, this should be on the "DON'T" list.

2) Caps and gowns

{;ave a cap on medicinal drug spend and find your patients in hospital gowns. Cost "saving" measures backfire with the sicker patients fairing much worse that the more healthy one.. (But they did 30 years ago when the VA tried the same thing). Why an I not surprised?

3) State of Washington finds for pharmacists

Pharmacists retain the right to refuse to dispense "morning after pill". I'm sure that there will be a barrel but that pharmacists will retain "conscientious objector" rights.

4) Specialty drug price go to the moon

Manage it or lose. Express Scripts shows that managing high-tech/high-cost meds can save plans money. Lots of stats worth reviewing.

5) Paxil (and generics) manufacturers can't be sued for suicides.

Interesting review of the ins and outs of pharmaceutical product liability issues.

6) Maine stream it isn't.

Supreme court lets lower ruling stand related to Maine'e regulation of PBMs.  Expect the big three PBM's to bow out of the State….and Maine to take over the function (we'll see if the state will continue to do all of the work and NOT take anything for it… fat chance).

7) Free advice about owning the argument.

HPV vaccination of young girls to prevent cervical cancer needs a new face. Instead of being an issue of STD prevention and "promotion of promiscuity" the discussion needs to shift to  protecting women from a disease that shows no symptoms in men and thus could be transmitted to a virgin on her wedding night (if hubby was previously exposed.) Expect to hear a lot more about this one.

Have a SUPER-FANTASTIC week.

Steve
