Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 06-16-2008

Quote of the day:    By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right,

he usually has a son who thinks he's wrong.
                                       Charles Wadsworth

Good morning !

D-Day

What do Calvin Coolidge (1924), Lyndon Johnson(1966) and Richard Nixon (1972) have in common? All were involved in the establishment of Father’s day. http://www.attheoak.com/fathersday.html  I was surprised to find that Father’s day was only officially established in 1972.

Maybe your dad can’t play catch. Maybe he couldn’t put a worm on a hook if his life depended on it. Not all know which end of a hammer is the business end or how to unclog a drain. Your backyard hamburgers may more closely resemble Kingsford charcoal that something to put on a bun.  Most do know how to use a remote control but may not always give the best advice. These are all specific skills and remain irrelevant to how much we love these men. The day marks an opportunity to show our appreciation to fathers who have worked and sacrificed to support us but most importantly who love us... sometime in spite of our actions.

The job of a father is not the easiest one in the world. If you are a new dad or an old hat at the game, you may find some useful tips and advice at the following website: www.dads.org We all can use some help from time to time even if it is just learning to bait a hook or dry a tear. Now that the kids have come and gone and I have a pile a cards to go with the memories I have to go upstairs and unclog a toilet… really. Amazing how reality helps make life and the ppp more interesting.

ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "Just a little under excellent"

  ------------

1) Rheumatoid arthritis doubles risk of heart attack or stroke

RA equal to diabetes as risk factor for stroke/heart attack. Use of ace inhibitors and statins urged as preventative. I would like to see the studies done sooner rather than later before this becomes the standard of practice.

2) More counterfeit drugs seized

Internet sales of drugs leads to counterfeiting and the delivery of illegally manufactured generic forms of drugs still on patent. 24% increase in delivery of tablets/capsules containing no drug or dangerous chemicals. With the PMA giving away drugs to those that need them, part-D Medicare prescriptions plans and the Wal-Mart/Target programs which practically give drugs away, why would anyone consider buying from “Canadian” pharmacies online?

3) You knew the lawsuits wouldn’t trail the recall by much…

Digitek was manufactured with double the labeled ingredient (digoxin). Patients receiving the extra amount experienced adverse drug reactions and death. This is one drug where the difference between therapeutic doses and toxic doses is very small. Legal action, as described, follows the mistake.

4) “Wort” no hyper help

St. John’s Wort was tested on 54 children with ADHD to no positive effect. No change in side effects either. Another thing we know doesn’t work.

5) Float like a butterfly…   WHAT like a bear?

Glaxo has sold over 4 million kits for Alli, an OTC form of the drug orlistat (Xenical). The drug reduces fat absorption. If patients continue to eat a lot of fat then that is passed into the stool where it produces large quantities of foul smelling feces. The kits also urge adherence to a regimen of diet and exercise to produce weight loss. I sure hope those kits contain samples of Charmin for those that think the pills will allow them to eat anything they want.

6) Recall of morphine tablets

Single lot of extended release morphine called because manufacturer found one double-struck super potent tablet.

7) You say “Toe-may-toe”, I say “Toe-mah-toe” let’s give the FDA more bucks.

The recent salmonella outbreak linked to tomatoes has done what months of lobbying couldn’t do… freed up much needed funds for the FDA’s regulatory efforts... an additional $275 million.

Have a SUPER-FANTASTIC week.

Steve
