Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 07-11-2005

Quote of the day:  Change is inevitable

(unless it is from a vending machine!) Annon.

Good morning !

Change

Things just aren't the same anymore! Change can make us uncomfortable. The look of this page is different from anything I have used to date. Does that make you uncomfortable or curious to see what other changes may be in the offing? Change represents the opposite of the status quo. If there would never have been any changes then we might still be hunting mastodons with spears. Fire would have been shunned and you certainly would not be reading this in electronic format. However, change isn't always for the best; as evidenced most recently by the changes we have seen after 9/11. We adapt...we move on.

I learned from a psychologist friend of mine that when men are feeling that "something" has to change but are not feeling in control of things that they will often change their facial hair; grow or remove a mustache or beard or sideburns. Women change their hairstyle in similar circumstances.   Try forcing a little change into your life before things get this far.  Don't park in the same spot every day. Take a different route to work at least once a week (you may need one if traffic is snarled or the weather is uncooperative); you may just find a better way. Always have a burger for lunch? Try a salad once in awhile. Variety is truly the spice of life so if you find yourself getting "bored" then shake things up a bit.

Let me know if you like this color scheme better that past versions. I am will to change back as well as change forward!

ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "Super-Dee-Dooper!"

(Somebody has been watching too much "Barney!")

1) Pigs can relax now!

For decades insulin was harvested from the pancreases of pigs and cows. Eli Lilly will now retire the last of their line of animal insulin. Human insulin is now the standard. A small group of activists want to have access to animal insulin but they are a very small in number. (I'll bet that none of them belong to PITA!)

2) I'm mad as heck and I'm not going to take it anymore! (unless you pay me a lot)

Pharmacist shortage continues to take its toll. Walgreens' pharmacists strike. This is probably a case of working conditions and not pay (they make 6 figures to start). A bunch of pharmacists have left the union and are working. (at $50/hr could you afford to strike?)

3) FDA may be red… may be white… but definitely BLUE!

FDA issues a statement on antidepressants and suicide in adults. A HUGE analysis of drug company data has begun. Will be more than a year before results are in. Guidance offered in the interim.

 4) … not that CVS stands to make any money or anything.

CVS teams with United Health Group to explain how to use the new Medicare Part D plan. (Sound like they may be jumping the gun on the marketing date of October 15th) http://www.pharmacyonesource.com/members/work/daily_news/article.asp?category_id=19&record_id=161308

 5) Editorial on a pre-emptive fix for the looming MEDIARE PART D benefit.

The link will take you to another view of the Medicare Part D (prescription drug benefit). Congress took from the 1960's to this last legislation to put together a drug benefit. They are not about to scrap the whole thing and start all over again. Marketing of plans can start until mid- October and plans will have only 6 weeks to enroll all the members that they can. This "benefit" is not going to be good for all seniors. Some should forgo the coverage. Some should be thankful that they have it. The key is to know which group you are in!

 6) Anxious lawmakers want to cover benzodiazepines after all.

I'm sure that constituents put pressure on them… and nothing means "pressure" like and anxious, voting oldie. (You don't think that "they" are reading the ppp do you?)

 7) Chronic anger isn't healthy

Weakened immune systems and self destructive actions such as smoking occur with hostility. Many strokes occur within 2 hours of such angst. Counting to 10, cleansing breaths, or other stress relievers could save your life.

…or would you rather be gruntled in a new job?
