Pepin’s Pharmaceutical Prattle for 07-17-2006

Quote of the day:    The best way to keep children home is to make the home atmosphere pleasant

--and let the air out of the tires. Dorothy Parker (1893 - 1967)

Good morning !

Bonsai Kids

While at the nursery the other day I picked up a flyer entitled "Make your own Bonsai". After reading it I realized that it was also the prescription for raising good children.

   1) "Start with a pre-bonsai plant." (your unformed child)

   2) "Remove all unwanted or unhealthy foliage from the tree but do not remove too much." (Curtail any harmful or destructive traits)

   3) "Remove the pre-bonsai from the pot and scrape away a small amount of dirt from around the trunk and expose some of the root structure. Cut any roots that are too long. Be sure that the trunk remains stable in the soil." (Allow your children the freedom to express themselves and find their individual voices while staying firmly grounded in family values.)

   4) "Cover the holes of the pot with screen and add a little soil." (Screen what goes into your children's eyes and ears… too much TV of any kind may stifle growth.)

   5) "Place the tree in the most attractive position [usually off to one side] and fill in with soil. Make sure the tree sits firmly in the pot." (I have planted my little bonsais on the RIGHT. Books are like good soil and help to firm up your children's view of their family and the world in which we live.)

   6) "Water thoroughly. You may wish to plant moss or lay gravel on top." (Instill in your children a life-long thirst for knowledge and top everything off with a grounding in faith.)

Early pruning of undesirable or unhealthy behavior enhances to odds of having well adjusted, strong and vibrant adult children. If you let a tree grow wild for 18 years it will be impossible to make into a bonsai tree. You would need a chainsaw for pruning and the tree unlikely to survive having to be cut back so drastically. If you do not tend to your children as they grow then heartache is likely all that you will reap.

1) Atripla and headed for home!

Once a day HIV pill approved. Most HIV/AIDS patients have struggled with timing of their medications (too frequent produces side effects and missing a dose or taking it late allowed the virus to multiply). Pill actually contains three drugs: efavirenz 600 mg/ emtricitabine 200 mg/ tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300 mg, With approval of the once a day therapy, Atripla, I Hope that patients don't get complacent!

2) No longer a one-trick PONV

Post Operative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV) has long been a problem. Emend(aprepitant) was just approved for this indication. Administered as one 40mg dose three hours before anesthesia. (Has already been approved against chemotherapy induced n&v)

3) Changing horses mid-stream.

FDA may allow study changes mid-study. This may make interpretation of the results even more difficult but may save a waste of resources.

4) Pharma lobbies for FDA funds

Pharmaceutical manufacturers want to federal government to give the FDA more money. Motive? The pharma share of FDA funding has double in the last few years and they don't want to pay the full freight,

5) Not Cyrano this time.. but Roxanne

Roxane labs have a report of methotrexate tablets found in a bottle of their azathioprine so they recalled the entire lot (#558470A). Better safe than sorry!

6) Reduced red-face without sunscreen

One pharma company wants the FDA to approve a form of long-acting niacin with a reduced incidence of facial flushing. Until then: you can try if you flush when taking niacin is to take a small amount of aspirin (if you have no contraindication to it). It works so fast and so well that it is kin to a parlor trick.

7) Melanoma of the head on the rise

The incidence has risen for both men and woment since the '50s, If you put on sunscreen this week then be sure that it block both UV-A and UV-B. Most will block the UV-A which is responsible for burns but not stop the UV-B which are responsible for increased cancer risk,
