09-12-2005 Quote of the day: The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining. John F. Kennedy (1917 - 1963)
Katrina Additional stress is felt by the Nation as we remember those lost on September 11, 2001. Disasters, natural and man-made, will continue for all time (pretty safe prediction) so being prepared, as well as we can, is important. I subscribe to a newsletter at www.dads.org This week Steve Woods, the author, speaks on how to REALLY help the victims of Katrina. He speaks from his experience going through hurricane Charley. Cans of pressurized FLAT FIX was one suggestion…for those with cars. Victims are very unlikely to be online or have a car with any tires let alone flat ones but the rest of the newsletter offers some great suggestions. http://www.dads.org/FreedomLetter_9-1-05.htm Walgreen’s has a leg up on most other pharmacies… the main database of prescription drug information is kept on a central computer and contains the records of all prescriptions that Walgreen’s fills. If patients can get to ANY Walgreen’s store then their prescriptions are still accessible. After the waters recede and things start to get back to normal then maybe Walgreen’s can talk about using their stores as part of a family emergency plan. Here in Minnesota we have only a few worries: - an occasional tornado - cheese-heads - ten days of cold weather after New Years Day - a bumper crop of tomatoes and zucchini in late September
Make some preparation while the sun shines. Once the hurricane hit, residents of the “Big Easy” could not get cash from the machines. Speaking of cash….if you can share from your abundance there are many ways to help. It is best to give through established charities rather than answering e-mail spam from anyone (The scams have already begun).
…. Would anyone like to share a recipe for zucchini bread? (Just trying to get prepared….I’ll post it next week). ==================================================== ps. Best answer this week to the question "How are you?" was "Alive... thank God!" (New Orleans)
pps. Occasionally, some of the links require FREE registration.... I'm sure you can handle THAT slight inconvenience.
==================================================== 1) Just in time for the fall allergy season… Generic Allegra…. This is quite risky for the two generic houses because often the originator gets triple the sales as damages if the patent holder prevails in court. There is a lot of money at stake here…. somebody thinks it is worth the risk. http://news.moneycentral.msn.com/ticker/article.asp?Feed=AP&Date=20050906&ID=5090217&Symbol=US:SNY 2) AARP papers the USA AARP has purchased $2 million jn newspaper ads across the country to tell people about the Medicare Part-D benefit. The FED will spend a lot more than that. http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news/1125567399107900.xml&coll=2 3) Truth stranger than fiction. PBM mail order pharmacies were not more expensive than free-standing mail order pharmacies (and often cheaper). (Hey… I can’t make this stuff up!) http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2005/09/pharmbenefit.htm 4) Up you nose… sweetheart! Diabetics who fear needles cheer the action of the committee that recommended FDA approval of inhaled insulin. Expected to contain a warning that smokers should avoid it (absorb too much) and that asthmatics may encounter lung problems…. but it will spare some the needle! 5) Terrible triptan? Tempting to try two to three triptans… If one triptan does not work then patients may benefit from a trial of another triptan. The second tried triptan beat placebo (which is no big deal) but the patients had failed obtaining effects with the primary triptan... twice ( a bigger deal). 6) Feel good… feel bad. Ecstasy (the "Club" drug) users more prone to disease because it attacks the immune system. Shingles of the eye often leads to blindness… and THAT will not make you ecstatic…. and neither will meningitis. 7) Finally off the island for good. Bob Denver, AKA Maynard G. Krebs, AKA Gilligan, died this week at age 70. The shows will run forever but time catches up to all. How do you want to be remembered? Live THAT life and you will have your wish! http://www.comcast.net/tv/index.jsp?cat=TELEVISION&fn=/2005/09/06/215670.html ------------ Have a SUPER-FANTASTIC week.
